ATX Gluten-Free News: March 2010
The first signs of Spring are starting to appear- warmer days (besides the freakish snow storm we had last week!), flowers blooming, birds chirping. It is a beautiful time to be in Austin, Texas. There has been some great news in the gluten-free area of Austin recently. Many places are becoming more gluten-free friendly. Here are some updates on Austin gluten-free news:
Maggiano’s opened up in The Domain this week. They do not have an actual gluten-free menu, but I was told from one of the people at Brinker International that- the Chefs “take pride in creating meals for people with food allergies and Celiac Disease.” They serve a rice pasta as a substitution and may be able to customize dishes to accommodate those with food allergens, such as gluten or nuts.
Delish Cupcakes is now serving at least one gluten-free cupcake flavor at their store.
Fete Accompli- Austin specializes in handmade appetizers for parties of any size for pickup, delivery or catering. They have gluten-free options available.
PF Changs is debuting a newly updated gluten-free menu this month. Options include Fried rice, Beef with Broccoli, Mongolian Beef (my favorite!), Beef a la Sichaun, Salmon Steamed with Ginger, Pepper Steak, Hong Kong Beef with Snow Peas, Dali Chicken. Menu debuts March 8th.
Bona Dea Bread a local baking company, which I wrote about here, has debuted some new gluten-free scones. The flavor this past week was Coconut Almond Scones. She will be debuting a new flavor each week so stay tuned! Make sure and place your orders for gluten-free products by Mondays every week in order for pick up on Tuesday. It is worth it- the bread and scones are amazing!
Food Smarty, another local baking company, makes the best gluten-free desserts. I had the privilege to try a box of samples from Celina Jean (Thank you!). The Sesame cookies are my favorite! They are rich, succulent, and the coconut oil really shines through. Her products are gluten-free, organic and free of preservatives. There are also soy, dairy and nut-free options, as well as vegan options. Food Smarty treats are found at People’s Rx Westlake and Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse.
La Boite Cafe is an adorable food trailer on South Lamar. They have fabulous coffee and are now carrying gluten-free products from Blackbird Bakery (including the millet powder bars and almond kisses). La Boite Cafe also mentioned on twitter last week that their macaroons are also gluten-free.
Sandwich Petals is a new gluten-free product on the market that is wonderful. They call their products- gluten-free flat bread, but it is more like a tortilla. The petal holds food great and it will not crumble like a regular corn tortilla. Use the gluten-free petals for wraps, quesadillas, breakfast tacos, and more. I had a sample box sent to me a while back and consumed all of them very quickly; they are great. At this point in time, I have not seen them around Austin just yet, People’s Rx in Westlake will possibly have them soon. In the mean time , order them online. They have 3 great flavors- Agave Grain, Spinach-Garlic, and Chimayo Red Chile.
Don’t forget Austin Restaurant Week starts up again- March 7th- March 10th
